Flag football Play & Touch Calculator

How many chances with the ball can each child realistically get? Adjust your roster, game length, and pace to see a whole-touch split and a field-play budget.

Your game

Add play clock, play duration, and extra reset time only while the game clock runs. Count each second once. If the play clock already covers your whole reset, leave extra time at 0. 60 seconds = 1 minute.

Possession, lost time & No Touch plays

Offensive share is a share of game plays; the default is 50%. Other lost time means delays not already included in every play. Exclude halftime and time when the game clock is stopped.

Field plays per child

Every child gets 24 field plays.

Field plays include offense and defense. Touches are separate ball opportunities. These splits are budgets, not a lineup or an assignment to specific players.

See the calculation
  1. Usable game seconds: (2 × 20 − 0) × 60 = 2400.
  2. Play cycle: 45 + 15 + 0 = 60 seconds.
  3. Game plays: 2400 ÷ 60, rounded down = 40.
  4. Offensive plays: 40 × 50%, rounded down = 20.
  5. Touch opportunities: 20 × (100 − 0)%, rounded down = 20.
  6. Field slots: 40 × 6 = 240.

What the estimate means

The starting example is a roster of 10 in a 6v6 game with two 20-minute halves. A 45-second play clock plus 15 seconds of action produces a 60-second play cycle. With no additional delays, that allows 40 total game plays. At a 50% offensive share, your team has 20 offensive plays and a budget of 2 touches per child if every offensive play records one opportunity.

Those are assumptions to adjust, not a promise about your league’s pace. If each play needs another minute while the clock runs, the estimate drops to 20 total game plays, 10 offensive plays, and 1 touch per child.

Touches and playing time answer different questions

Champion Tracker records one runner or pass target for a tracked offensive opportunity. Incomplete passes can count as targets. A quarterback’s exchange and a center’s snap do not add separate touches. Use the No Touch percentage for offensive plays without a credited opportunity.

Field plays count how often a player is in the lineup, on offense or defense. The calculator spreads those slots evenly across the roster. It does not calculate each child’s exact minutes or account for position restrictions. Actual possession, substitutions, penalties, and clock rules will affect the result.

Use your estimate on game day

Start with the children who are available, set a realistic pace, and check the budget before promising a number of touches. Then track actual field plays and ball opportunities during the game. Read our guide to fair playing time and sharing touches in flag football for a worked 6v6 example.

Turn that budget into a starting plan with the 6v6 rotation chart, and learn what to record in the touch-tracking walkthrough.

Plan here. Track it on the sideline.
